Hybrid vehicle are obvious - lower maintenance costs, and less pollutive effects on the environment. However these hybrid cars and suvs are also becoming more visually appealing, with futuristic aerodynamic designs and stylistic space-efficient interiors.

Hybrid vehicle are primarily recharged by a process called "regenerative braking. " when the driver applies the brakes, the electric motor essentially runs in reverse - rather than consuming power to propel the car, it acts like a generatorand produces electrical energy. The batteries then capture and store this energy. When there is not sufficient braking to recharge the batteries, the gasolineengine takes up the slack and produces electrical power to charge them while the car is operating on gasoline-engine power.

Stores energy by using hydraulic fluid to compress nitrogen gas much as a battery is used to store energy in a hybrid electric vehicle. Stores the low pressure fluid after it has been used by the pump/motor. Converts pressurized hydraulic fluid into rotating power for the wheels as well as (acting as a pump) , captures braking energy by pumping hydraulic fluid back into the high pressure accumulator. Creates additional high pressure fluid needed to drive the vehicle, storing any excess in the high pressure accumulator.

There is also a 1.9-liter diesel engine instead of the 7.0, emitting less harmful gases. Emission reduction has been reported to be around 30% while fuel efficiency is around 40%. Some hybrid-electric buses have gas turbine generators. More efforts are exerted to convert other means of transportation like trains.
Several other types of HEVs are available today and are being used in various projects. The military uses diesel-electric hybrid trucks which has a fuel cell auxiliary power and diesel electric unit. The United States Army began using hybrid electric drives for all vehicle systems and subsystems. Other notable trucks have also found their purpose in commercial sectors, scientific projects and mining endeavors.
